Geek Out Collection Tour: Sext Based Adventures by Francis Gideon (genderqueer)

Title: On Avatars and Gender Identity

Hi there! I'm Francis Gideon and Smoocher's Voice has been kind enough to host my guest post for my story Sext Based Adventures. This story was released yesterday on Less Than Three Press with their collection called Geek Out!: A Collectionof Trans and Genderqueer Romance. The title is fairly self-explanatory; these are all romances involving trans nerds in some way or another. In my story, Chris is a genderqueer protagonist who spends most of his time online playing World of Warcraft until he meets Jessica, another player who interests him. As the two start up a relationship, Chris must confront the fact that he's been playing as a woman, and now must negotiate who he is as he steps out from behind the screen to meet Jessica in real life.

For my guest post, I want to talk about where this story idea came from. I'm in a film adaptations class right now, and we just had a week on films which are "based on a true story"; I sort of see Sext Based Adventures as one of those narratives. It's true—something like this really happened--but I've taken a lot of liberties, like any good adaptation usually does. What happens between Chris and Jessica didn’t happen to me, but another researcher in games studies at my school. While he was studying the game Second Life in more detail, he interviewed a player who had posed as a woman online and met another woman. I won't give away too many of the details of that “real life” story, but I will say that in my version, with Chris and Jessica, everything ends happily.

I could have told this story without talking about gender identity at all—but I knew I didn’t want to. To me, these characters needed to be trans, because there so much subversive potential for transgender identity in online spaces. In his autobiography, Chaz Bono speaks about his love of video games precisely because he got to choose his avatar. He could be a man in the video game world before he was really aware of what his desire meant in the 'real world.' The avatar, in a lot of ways, always becomes an extension of ourselves. Just think of anytime your character gets injured in a game—you often say "ow!" aloud, as though the pain were tangibly felt. Even when we're doing something like driving a car, we still assume the machine (car) as part of ourselves. When someone hits our car, we don't say, "you hit my car" but instead "you hit me."  This eclipsing of space between cyber bodies, real bodies, and the hybrid identity we form with our avatars I've always found really interesting, and I was so happy to be able to explore that via these characters.

On that note, I made Chris genderqueer in this story for a very particular reason. It's extremely important to have nonbinary representation, because as Cecil Wilde has already stated in
their blog post, nonbinary people become invisible very easily. When I look at my story as an author, Chris is a nonbinary or genderqueer protagonist, but I don't actually use that language (nonbinary, genderqueer) or even neutral pronouns in the story. This is not a gap in my knowledge, but a conscious decision. After a lot of thought, I ultimately decided I wouldn't use these terms in this particular story (I've used it in others) because not everyone is going to have access to that language or know how to use it. But their stories still matter and deserve representation.

In Sext Based Adventures, Chris' sister understands his gender and sexuality through the lens of her science degree; Chris, as he starts to articulate his difference, still defaults to the language of video games and the avatar. It doesn't matter what we have to help us understand who we are, only that we have something. For Chris and many nonbinary people, all we can do is show up, explain ourselves the best we can, and hope it all goes okay.

Author Post: K. Vale on Hard Act to Follow

Hard Act to Follow Playlist: Imogen Heap’s Goodnight and Go

Guest post by Kimber Vale

Hi, all! Kimber Vale here sharing another track from my Hard Act to Follow playlist. Today I’m enthusing about Goodnight and Go by Imogen Heap. Okay, so it’s kind of a stalkerish song, but it’s lovely anyway. Granted, I pretty much think Imogen Heap farts gold nuggets, but this tune is so sweet (in a slightly creepy way), I had to include it. It’s essentially about a girl being secretly enamored of a friend and she’s dreaming about what could happen if it wasn’t always just a say goodnight and go scenario. It’s darling. Give it a listen. And it fits well with Greg’s side of things in Hard Act to Follow. Admittedly, it could work for Kyrie’s as well, but we get more of Greg’s point of view toward the beginning of the book. Greg seriously pines for Kyrie—no matter how much he tries to deny it, no matter how much he works to keep his distance, no matter how wrong he thinks it is. Somewhere, in the back of his head, he’s always imagining a game night ending in something other than a goodnight and go. Eventually, he gets his deepest, darkest wish.

Of course, the small shot of Kyrie does nothing to quench Greg’s thirst. Quite the opposite, as you might expect. ;-)

YouTube link to Say Goodnight and Go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqjWodek8ZM

Excerpt:
Greg heaved two bags of potting soil—one over each shoulder—up four flights of stairs. This was his second load, but after hauling the three enormous glazed pots upstairs, this wasn’t so bad. Good mini-workout, anyway. And he desperately needed to sweat out some stress—the silence from Kyrie seemed to echo until Greg convinced himself he heard his phone ring multiple times a day. It was all in his head.
Maybe I should call him.
And say what? Kyrie obviously regretted what happened. Unless he truly didn’t remember, in which case Greg could never point-blank admit it to him. God, what a fucking mess! Maybe this way was for the best. If only Greg could erase the other night from his own memory, he could move on.
He’d tried. He left the TV or music on whenever he was home. He’d gone to work early and left late every day this past week, keeping as busy as humanly possible. It didn’t matter. Kyrie snuck into his dreams. He was there when Greg soaped his body in the shower, though Greg kept the temperature tepid to make sure he got in and got out. Never got off.
If he ever thought acting on his urges would ease the tension he felt with Kyrie, he was preposterously wrong. Knowing what it was like to be naked and uninhibited with his best friend was far worse. Now he knew what he’d miss. God, if he had to watch Kyr date other guys he’d lose his fucking mind.
Greg opened the sliding glass door again to retrieve his MP3 player and portable speaker from the living room. Drown out the thoughts in my head.

Blurb:
Kyrie is an actor with a physical aversion to telling lies, a one-eyed cat, and horrible taste in men. His ex-brother-in-law and best friend, Greg, harbors a secret crush he can’t shake. After denying his feelings for Kyrie for too long, Greg finally gives in to desire one drunken night. Come the morning, the facts get twisted. Kyrie pretends he doesn’t remember a thing—a lie that eats him alive—and Greg can’t stop thinking about how he screwed up the best thing in his life.
Before they can clear the air, Kyrie follows his dreams to New York City, but could he also be running away?
A mistake from Kyrie’s past detonates their silence, and Greg is forced to confront the man he loves. Is their new truth strong enough to support a relationship, or are they doomed to crumble under old fears? Their friendship could evolve into something a million times stronger, but maybe Kyrie’s act is just too hard for Greg to follow.

Guest Post: Author Cardeno C on the Songs that Inspire

We'd like to welcome to the Blog Cardeno C,

Series, In Your Eyes from Dreamspinner

Press.

Mates Series Inspiration Songs by Cardeno C.

Most of my book titles are inspired by songs I listened to while writing the book to put myself in the right mood and mindset. With the newest standalone novel in my Mates having been recently released, I thought it’d be fun to go over the songs that inspired my books in the series.

In Your Eyes – Inspiration Song: Animal by Miike Snow

It's hard to come up with a better song to inspire a book about wolf shifters than one called Animal, especially when one of those shifters - Samuel - struggles not to stay in his animal form and leave the human world behind. Samuel was always a good man who wanted to do right by his pack, but in many ways, he lived in a world dark from a lack of emotions and empathy, which was a danger to him and those he was meant to lead.

From the first moment Samuel saw Korban, he knew there was something in the other shifter's eyes, but it took him many years to identify what it was. In the end, Korban can fill the hole that has always lived in Samuel. Korban's strength, while different from Samuel's, compliments the Alpha well and allows him to be the strong leader he always longed to be.
The last thing I loved about this song for this book is the happy vibe in it. In Your Eyes has some sad scenes and battles, both internal and external, that the characters have to fight. It felt good to hear a peppy song as I wrote it.

Until Forever Comes is a novel about Ethan a young, ill shifter who realizes his mate is an ancient, dangerous vampire and Miguel, an intelligent, blood-thirsty vampire who realizes his salvation comes in the form of a spirited young wolf. Ethan has never been right in the eyes of his pack. He is a shifter who can't shift, something that shouldn't happen.

Being different and physically weak has given him more than his share of sadness and pain, but it also gave him something rare among his people - the ability to look past what's supposed to be and see what is. Ethan has lived his whole life in a way that doesn't make sense by shifter law, so when he learns he is mated to a male and a vampire at that, he manages to look past the complications that block stronger shifters and see the simple truth: Miguel is his mate.
That mating saves both men, bonding their bodies and making each of them stronger. Through their connection and love, they give each other life. A vampire and a wolf mated, it shouldn't have been possible, that day shouldn't have come. But it did and instead of running away from it, they embraced it and got to live a not-quite eternal life where a shifter can finally shift and a vampire can see the sun.

The lyrics of this song speak of someone whose core is numb and spirit is sleeping. They need someone to lead them out of that dark place before they come undone; they need to come home. I don't want to give too much away for anyone who hasn't read Wake Me Up Inside, but it's about shifters and the concept of what true mates need from and mean to each other in that world.

Author Post: Jordan Castillo Price on Meatworks

Smoocher’s Voice is proud to be hosting Jordan Castillo Price on the blog today! You can find Jordan and her books on her website: http://jcpbooks.com/. You can enter the rafflecopter at the end of the post to win an e-copy of her latest book Meatworks.

While robots play a big part in Meatworks, my choice of robotics wasn’t based on any particular affinity with robots. I’ve always enjoyed things like clockwork and automata, but robots aren’t a particular obsession for me. The concept that’s always tickled my fancy is the “smarthouse”!

During the sixties, Disneyland featured a smarthouse, filled with cutting-edge devices like the “microwave oven” and the “video” intercom. Because it was designed by engineers from a plastics company in an attempt to promote their product, everything in it was made of molded plastic. When it came time to tear the exhibit down, the wrecking ball bounced right off. (See, these smarthouse stories practically write themselves.)

Who wouldn’t enjoy waking up to the perfect climate, with the perfect view, and the perfect breakfast waiting for them? I think smarthouses play to a few different emotions. First, there’s the sense of being taken care of. Sometimes I can go with the flow and take things as they come, but once in a while I find myself irked if enough things don’t go my way. With a smarthouse, it’s all about you. You’re the center of the universe. You’re nurtured. You matter.

Which leads me to the whole self-importance thing. Smarthouses would handle the plebeian stuff so I could devote my precious mental energy to all the fantastic and unique things I would wish to do. Let’s not think about the fact that in my copious free time I’d probably go play Candy Crush Saga.

Smarthouses are perfect fodder for fiction because there’s so much potential for things to go horribly wrong. The smarthouse in the TV show Eureka was always good for a screwy episode when it went awry. At one point it fell in love with an android, and another it went amok and started attacking its residents.

The double-edged sword of the “smart” technology is that while it does relieve the used of the piddly decision-making that can be a royal pain, the limits get blurred.

MEATWORKS EXCERPT

If I didn’t “shake” with the housebot, how would it be able to add my temperature preferences to those of the group and adjust the HVAC system accordingly? And the lighting system? And the music mix? While my own preference for old school punk usually resulted in some bizarre selections when I mingled with a group of more conservative folk, and the housebot averaged our musical taste into something that all of us could snigger at…I’d been less than enthused lately about baring my soul to just any old piece of machinery.
It wasn’t that I was afraid of the dumb thing—I’d repaired enough of them to know there were no moving parts—it was the principle. Can’t a guy go somewhere without being read? What if I want to sweat for a change—or shiver? What if I’m in the mood for some country and western? What if I want to tell my social worker where I’ve been and have him take my word for it?

In Meatworks, the society shaped by twenty years of smart robotics has grown passive, complacent, and helpless. Everything comes with a price, and in this case the price of convenience is autonomy. The main character, Desmond Poole, isn’t willing to pay that price. It’s interesting to consider how much I’d be willing to sacrifice one for the other.

BLURB

Desmond Poole is damaged in more ways than one. If he was an underachiever before, he’s entirely useless now that he’s lost his right hand. He spends his time drowning his sorrows in vodka while he deliberately blows off the training that would help him master his new prosthetic. Social Services seems determined to try and stop him from wallowing in his own filth, so he’s forced to attend an amputee support group. He expects nothing more than stale cookies, tepid decaf and a bunch of self-pitying sob stories, so he’s blindsided when a fellow amputee catches his eye.

Corey Steiner is a hot young rudeboy who works his robotic limb like an extension of his own body, and he’s smitten by Desmond’s crusty punk rock charm from the get-go. Unfortunately, Desmond hasn’t quite severed ties with his ex-boyfriend, and Corey isn’t known for his maturity or patience.

Meatworks is set in a bleak near-future where cell phone and personal computer technologies never developed. In their place, robotics flourished. Now robots run everything from cars to coffee pots. Taking the guesswork out of menial tasks was intended to create leisure time, but instead robots have made society dependent and passive.
Desmond loathes robots and goes out of his way to avoid them. But can he survive without the robotic arm strapped to the end of his stump?

Author Post: Jeff Erno talks about Business Strip

Smoocher’s Voice is proud to be hosting Mr. Jeff Erno on the blog today! You can find Jeff through his website: www.jefferno.com  Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win an e-copy of his book!

Thank you so much for hosting me on your blog, and it’s truly an honor to be here. I’m excited to talk about my new book, just released on July 1st at Extasy Books. Business Strip is book three of the Men’s Room series. Although the books can be read as a series, each story features unique characters and stand-alone plots.

The Men’s Room is a (fictional) bar in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The idea for the series came to me after visiting New Orleans for the GRL Conference in 2011. I loved the city so much that after the conference, I made another trip to New Orleans a month later. I decided to write a series of stories that centered around one bar, and each story within the series features someone associated with the bar.

Book One, Twinsational, features twins Darren and Michael who work as go-go dancers at the club. Book two, Cocktails, is about Rustin, a college-aged bartender who falls in love with a Texas cowboy. Book three, Business Strip, is about one of the customers, Richard, who works at a nearby hotel as the desk clerk
Richard is 22 years old, and he still lives at home with his mom and sister. He doesn’t make it public knowledge, but his sister is sick and has to undergo kidney dialysis three times per week. She’s been approved for transplant surgery, and Richard has volunteered to be her donor.

Chad Curtiss is a 35 year old business traveler from New York City. When he flies into New Orleans on business, he encounters Richard while checking into the hotel. Chad’s used to getting what he wants and being pampered because his social position and wealth. He doesn’t like the fact that Richard doesn’t seem impressed. But for some reason, Chad can’t stop thinking about Richard, how feisty he is and how hot he looks in his work uniform. Chad sets out to make Richard another of his many conquests.

Though the two are extremely different from each other, their attraction grows, and they learn things about the other that surprise both of them. But when tragedy strikes Richard’s family, Chad suddenly faces some important decisions. Will he do the right thing or will he let his only chance of true love slip from his fingers?

I have to say that of all the characters I’ve written, Richard happens to be one of my absolute favorite. He’s cute, he’s funny, and he has a heart of gold. I hope you fall in love with him the same as I have.

Although Business Strip released this week, all three of The Men’s Room stories will be coming soon in a combined edition that will be available in both e-book and paperback. Please leave a comment for a chance to win a copy of Business Strip, and I’ll be doing more giveaways when the print edition is released.

Blurb:

Whoever said business and pleasure don’t mix has never been to New Orleans.

Chad Curtiss, a thirty-five year old private equity investor, is a ruthless businessman. He believes it’s a dog-eat-dog world and doesn’t understand people not driven by the desire to acquire their own happiness. Life’s about personal responsibility and making the right choices.

Chad travels to New Orleans on occasion for business and while there, he likes to visit The Men’s Room. The hottest gay club in the city has the hunkiest dancers, the cutest bartenders and the kind of service a man like Chad knows he deserves. While at the bar, he runs into young Richard Foster, a desk clerk from the hotel where he’s staying. He has no intention of becoming involved, but there’s something about the kid Chad can’t dismiss, and that something just might change his entire outlook on life.

Author Post: Jayden Brooks and That's Who I Am

Smoocher's Voice is happy to welcome Jayden Brooks to the Blog. Jayden recently published her first book: That's Who I Am, with Dreamspinner Press.

Jayden:

My main character, Jared, has a habit of blurting out whatever pops into his head. Living life without a fully functional filter is something I think many of us can relate to. I know I can.

There’s been many a day where I opened my mouth, brain screaming at me to zip it, and said some pretty embarrassing crap. Sometimes I’m hyper aware it’s happening, but like a train wreck I’m absolutely helpless to stop the carnage. Other times, I won’t realize the err of my mouth until I have a chance to sit and reflect. I’m not sure what’s worse.

I’m going to share an example of one of my more recent, but epic flubs. This one has been eating at me for a while.

I have an itty-bitty fangirl obsession with a certain go-go dancer and his main squeeze. One day, after a few glasses of wine for fortification, I sent an email. I rambled a bit, but otherwise it was fairly straight forward, I was asking for permission to use a photo. Weeks go by and I don’t hear back, I was a little bummed, but I knew he was on an extended tour so I put it behind me, figuring it wasn’t going to happen. Then out of the blue, he sends me a Facebook friend request. And this, right there, is the point when my brain went on hiatus.

I can sweep in and competently handle a disaster with a calm head and a steady hand. I’m serious, even if it involves one of my children (two or four legged) and copious amounts of blood. But a happy surprise will trip me up. Every. Single. Time.

So as I’m scrambling in shock at his merely sending me a friend request, screeching like banshee… he sends me a pm. And I was done. My oxygen starved brain ceased all non-essential functions. That’s the only excuse I have. Even with the benefit of not having to immediately respond, of having the opportunity to stop and think before I hit send… my little piggy’s flew across the keyboard and let fly responses that would convince anyone that I was not competent enough to write a grocery list, much less a book. I goobered all over the nice man. Needless to say, the photo thing didn’t happen, I think it was mostly due to bad timing, but I’ll never be 100% certain.

Do you have an embarrassing story? I’d love to hear it.

Blurb:

Jared Winters’s life has been little more than a collection of moments where he didn’t think before opening his mouth. Always a bit different, he’s learned to accept an existence on the outside looking in. But one day, his mouth lands him in a position that nearly costs him his life. Only the timely intervention of Sophie, his twin Conner’s ex-girlfriend, saves him.

Siblings Sophie and Donovan Carrigan step in and offer support, comfort, and a place to call home. Under their care, Jared begins to heal and learns to trust just enough to act on his attraction to Donovan. He just hopes it’s worth the risk.

Author Post: SJD Peterson Celebrates with a GiveAway

This month, Dreamspinner Press is celebrating its seventh anniversary. I, too, am celebrating a milestone. Three years ago this month, DSP took a chance on a nobody and published the first in my Whispering Pines Ranch series -- Lorcan’s Desire. Just Jo became
SJD Peterson, published author. And WOW! What an amazing three years it’s been. I’ve had the privilege of working with the most amazing people, made some epic friends, and am honored I get to do what I love each and every day.  Thank you so much to everyone who has stood by me, helped me polish my stories, inspired me, bought a book, wished me luck, or shared a smile. It’s because of each and every one of you that I am able to celebrate.

Lorcan will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s where my journey began, and it is he who inadvertently made my newest and fifteenth release with DSP possible. Roped is the fourth book in the Guards of Folsom series, a spin off from WPR, which follows Ty & Blake (from Ty’s Obsession) to New York City. Each book in this series is a standalone story based on the clients of their BDSM club.

Roped features Tek & Jamie the two mountain-sized men Mason runs into in Tag Team. They are a bit different than the rest of the characters in the series in that they really aren’t into the BDSM lifestyle per se, but definitely have a few fun kinks.

There is a lot more to come in the Guards of Folsom series as well as plenty of other stories coming in the next year. I can only hope the next three years are as wonderful as the past three.

Happy Anniversary Dreamspinner Press and Happy Birthday Lorcan!

You can currently purchase Roped through the publisher at a 30% discount until May 18. Just click on the logo!
